THE GIRLS MOST LIKELY

by Michael Agger
From New York Magazine — October 9, 2000
“Wonderful-looking, empowered superheroes” is how the writer Dan Max describes the McPhee sisters, Jenny and Martha, daughters of venerated New Yorker reporter John McPhee. “They remind me of those cartoon characters the Powerpuff Girls — intense and diminutive.” And this fall, the sisters will attempt to combine their literary clout — perhaps giving the Ephrons a run for their money. After producing one novel apiece — Martha made an impressive debut withBright Angel Time a couple of years ago, and Jenny has one coming out next summer — they’re about to publish their manifesto on girlhood at the turn of the millennium, Girls, with photographs by their sister Laura. No Teen People junkies, these girls: The subjects study biogenetics, play football, write novels, and paint like Picasso….”

This is a shout-out to Mark Svenvold, old Seattle friend and one-time housemate of mine, over 25 years ago now, alas. I happened upon MORE magazine on the right day & read your gorgeous story about your gorgeous [emerging family] and went nuts with jubilation! It was indeed a gorgeous story I passed on to several. Tried to find any way to make contact you; stymied! Please, please reply??!! Am still in the same location where in 1982! you “fed them cats!” Would thrill to re-connect!! Also thrilled at your ensuing success! In / thru NYC no less! Good – good for you, Mark! Will you please reply??!!!!! your old friend, claudia. montlake. seattle.
Claudia, You landed in the right spot. I will pass this along to Mark ASAP. He’s off running in a Fourth of July race. Thanks for writing. He’ll be thrilled to hear from an old friend.
