With my sister, Jenny. We’re standing on the wing of an airplane. The airplane belonged to my mother’s divorce lawyer. I love this photograph, taken by our brilliant mother. Jenny is wearing black patent leather shoe-boots. I wanted white patent leather shoe-boots more than anything in the world, but they didn’t make them for children so I wore my white socks pulled up high to make it look like I had a pair. Today I join Jenny in her blog pursuit: Silver Linings. Her desire is to pay attention, to wonder in the best sense of wonderment, to find relief in beauty, joy in noticing. As coronavirus sweeps across the globe, as our lives change, she wants to hold on. We live in New York City. For our own reasons, I am leaving and she is staying. I am headed to New Jersey to be with our mother who no longer has her memory. Jenny is staying here, for now, to be with her children who can’t leave. I love this photograph because it captures us awed, amazed, transfixed, by something dazzling us in the sky.
Lovely memory.
